The New Way to Find Real Competitors in the Stock Market
Imagine trying to judge Apple’s performance by comparing it to a steel company. It makes no sense. Still, many platforms do exactly that because they group companies using broad industry labels.
These labels can place thousands of unrelated businesses in the same bucket.
If you search for Apple, you would sometimes see competitors with name similarity.
These were simply the first companies in an alphabetical list, not real peers.
So, when we started building trade & tonic, our goal was simple:
Show meaningful comparisons that help investors make real decisions.
A Smarter Way to Find Peers
We created an intelligent engine that understands two important ideas:
Industry similarity. The system checks what a company actually does.
Company size. The system compares businesses in the same league.
Think of it like comparing restaurants.
You would never compare a small pizza shop to a global fast food chain, even if both sell food.
They play in different worlds.
Our system thinks the same way.
Professional Categories That Match Real Life
We use more than two hundred professional categories.
These categories match the same structure used by analysts on Wall Street.
This means:
• Tesla is compared with Rivian, Lucid, NIO, and XPeng.
• Snapchat is compared with Pinterest and Twitter.
• Coinbase is compared with trading platforms and exchanges.
No more strange pairings.
No more forcing companies into the wrong groups.
It feels like having the knowledge of a professional analyst built inside the platform.
How We Fixed the Technical Problem
Financial data providers often return companies in alphabetical order.
If you ask for companies in a specific industry, you may see the first few thousand entries that begin with A. This includes many tiny or unknown businesses that have nothing in common with Apple, Tesla or Netflix.
We solved this by sorting companies by market size. We also filter out generic tickers and rank companies using a scoring model that looks at size, industry and behavior. This allows the system to act more like a human analyst.
Before and After: What Changed
Before the update:
• Tesla was compared with Amazon
• Tesla was compared with Apple
• Tesla was compared with Google
None of these were real competitors in the automotive world.
After the update:
• Tesla is compared with Lucid
• Tesla is compared with NIO
• Tesla is compared with Rivian
• Tesla is compared with XPeng
These are true peers in the electric vehicle market.
Why Accurate Peers Matter
Peer comparisons help answer important questions.
Is the company doing better than similar businesses?
Are its profit margins normal for its industry?
Is its growth strong or weak?
Is the stock price fair compared to close competitors?
Good comparisons help you understand if a company is performing well or falling behind.
Bad comparisons create confusion.
AI Plus Human Understanding
The new system combines artificial intelligence with real market knowledge. AI handles the calculations and the heavy data work. The logic behind the categories comes from decades of human understanding about which companies actually compete.
This mix of machine reasoning and human insight creates meaningful results that feel natural and obvious.
What You Get Now
The new peer system:
• Covers almost fifteen thousand companies
• Uses more than two hundred professional categories
• Finds real competitors with more than ninety-five percent accuracy
• Returns results instantly
When you search for Tesla, you will see electric vehicle companies.
When you search for Netflix, you will see streaming companies.
When you search for NVIDIA, you will see semiconductor companies.
Everything finally makes sense.
What This Means for Investors
Investors can now trust that the comparison shown on trade and tonic reflects real market reality.
No more apples to oranges. Only relevant companies that help you understand performance, valuation and growth in context.
This new system brings professional-level competitor analysis to every investor, not just institutions.
